Finding joy in the shadow of God's wings

“Hide me in the shadow of your wings.” - Psalm 17:8

Being hidden under the shadow of God’s wings is an image that helps us understand that God protects us in the midst of trouble. One thing about this image I have never thought about before is what’s happening under God’s wings. In the shadow of God’s wings, we can relax. In the shadow of God’s wings, we can take time to enjoy what we have there. Under the shadow of God’s wings, many of us have found unexpected goodness there. Some of us have found this time during the pandemic to be a fresh breath of life away from all the busy-ness of before. Some of us have found this time to be a rare gift to reconnect with old friends. Some of us have been busier than usual, and at the same time have found the change in routine to be refreshing. Others have found new time to try things we had always dreamed of, but never ventured to do before. Others have rejoiced in the opportunity to refocus on what matters most in life. When the Psalmist wrote that beautiful verse, “Hide me in the shadow of your wings,” they were surrounded by deadly enemies (Ps 17:9). While COVID-19 still remains a threat, we are hidden under the shadow of God’s wings. What is happening under there? How is God bringing good into your life in unexpected ways? As we continue living under the shadow of God’s wings, let us keep alert for the goodness God provides for us under there.

Grace and peace to you in Christ,

Rev. Sarina
