So Much Work to be Done
“Listen here, mortal: God has already made abundantly clear what ‘good’ is, and what YHWH needs from you: simply do justice, love kindness, and humbly walk with your God.” - Micah 6:8
The U.S. election was a nail-biter. But finally, on Saturday, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were declared president- and vice president-elect. I have felt such a huge amount of relief flood through me. It’s as if I can finally exhale a breath I have been holding for four years.
In the past, many people, myself included, put too much trust in our elected officials, as if all that mattered was the election itself and the officials would take care of the rest. What the last four years has taught me is that democracy is about the people organizing and taking responsibility for their government all the time. Government by the people, for the people means that civic engagement should be a very important part of all of our lives. Now that this election has been called, many people are saying that there is still so much work to be done, and they are right.
There is a lot of misinformation out there and a lot of division that runs deep, even over the border here in Canada. There is so much work to be done to heal and reconcile so that we can find a way to work together to do justice and love kindness not only with our friends, but also with our political opponents and those whom we consider our enemies. Let us embark on this important work. Let us do it with Jesus as our guide, doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with our God.
